Rock, cousin of the late, legendary Heavy D, got his break in 1987 as a 17 year old DJ on Marley Marl’s WBLS FM radio show “In Control With Marly Marl”, in New York City.
Rock was known to WBLS listeners as “The Man Puttin’ In Work.”
Shortly after that, Rock began producing hip-hop recordings.
In 1991, Rock joined longtime friend C.L. Smooth as Pete Rock And C.L. Smooth and released the EP “All Souled Out” on Elektra Records.
In 1992, the duo released their legendary sophomore set “Mecca And The Soul Brother” which would contain the hit “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)”, a tribute single to Trouble “T-Roy”, a dancer with Heavy D And The Boyz, who had recently died tragically in an accident while on tour.
Rock’s jazz influenced style, with an emphasis on sampled horns, on his work with C.L. Smooth as well as on the productions and remixes he did for other artists was extremely unique and groundbreaking. His production skills at this time were one of the most in demand in hip-hop and r’n’b.
Rock produced classic cuts for Run-DMC, Nas, Common Sense, Mic Geronimo, Ghostface Killah and Biggie Smalls, amongst countless others.
Rock also became known as the “remix king”, re-cutting tracks for Jeru The Damaja, Das EFX, Public Enemy, The Black Eyed Peas, Busta Rhymes and Black Star, just to name a mere few.
In 1994, after the release of their last album together as a duo called “The Main Ingredient”, Rock and Smooth went their separate ways.
Rock formed the group INI with his brother Grap Luva and Rob-O, with the trio releasing the album “Center Of Attention”, which wound up being shelved and was not released until 2003 on BBE Records.
In 1998, Rock released his debut solo album “Soul Survivor” on Loud Records. Shortly thereafter, Rock started his own label called Soul Brother Recordings and released the underground classic “Petestrumentals”, which would influence producers like Kanye West and the late J Dilla.
Pete Rock has released six more albums since; 2003’s “Lost & Found: Hip Hop Underground Soul Classics”, 2004’s “Soul Survivor II” and “My Own Worst Enemy” (with Ed O.G.), 2005’s “The Surviving Elements: From The Soul Survivor II Sessions”, 2008’s “N.Y.’s Finest” and 2011’s “Monumental” (with Smif-N-Wessun).
Pete Rock is expected to release two new albums in 2012; “Petestrumentals II” and a collaborative album with Camp Lo.
There has also been talk in the industry of a possible new Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth album on the way as well.
Pete Rock is one of the most innovative producers and creative minds in music history.
